Hammer was a new hybrid for 2009 being added to the HGCA Recommended List 2009/2010.The variety has a high gross output, being 4% higher than Castille. Hammer has an above average score for stem canker as well as having a relatively short stiff stem.

In Masstocks trials, Hammer has shown to be an extremely fast autumn developer.

Yield and Gross Output

Hammer is a key variety on the East & West Recommended List where its high rating for resistance to stem canker (6.3) and light leaf spot (5.3) is an major advantage. Hammer is an early to flower and medium late maturity, which fits well with other varieties to spread harvest workload.

 Straw Characteristics

Hammer has excellent straw characteristics, with a strong relatively short stem. It has one of the highest scores for stem stiffness (8) as well as scoring extremely well for resistance to lodging (8). Hammer also shows very fast autumn development.

Drilling Dates

Hammer should be drilled according to target seed numbers (seeds per square metre) not by seed weight. Hammer is supplied in unit packs (3-4ha), containing 1.8 million seeds, which equates to a sowing rate of 60 seed per m² (3ha).

 ‘we have decided to put all our eggs in one basket and grow Hammer this year, as we really need a variety with early vigour in order to have the best chance of establishing before the winter sets in. With other work commitments and a busy harvest period we generally drill our rape late so a hybrid was an obvious choice. We also work on a very tight second wheat rotation, therefore stem canker resistance is important when choosing a variety’.
