Forage rye (Secale cereale L.)




Characteristics:

  • Leafier than cereal rye
  • Broad leaves
  • Height: up to 2 m
  • Ear: slightly drooping with long, awned lemmas
  • Root: epigeogenous rhizome, lateral roots

 

Environmental needs:

  • None
  • Low warmth requirements

 

Use:

  • Winter catch crop
  • Forage and biogas feed before maize sowing (mid to late April)
  • Harvest from about 60 cm height, between awn tips starting to develop and becoming visible

Green manure:

  • Ground cover while winter time
  • Harvest and root residue 18-20 quintals DM/ha
  • Relative good preceding crop effect
  • Fast ripening allows early sowing of succeeding crops
  • Suitable as a cover crop for various undersow crops
