Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)




Characteristics:

  • Annual, winter-hardy
  • Tufted
  • Leaves: ribbed on upper and shiny on lower side, light to dark green
  • Stem: reddish tinge at the base
  • Height: up to 1 m
  • Inflorescence: long, narrow with 20-30 alternately arranged spikelets
  • Root: shallow-rooting

 

Environmental needs:

  • Adaptable to different conditions
  • Light to medium soils
  • Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soils
  • Needs warmth and moisture
  • Tends to die off in winter in rough or cold and dry regions

 

Use:

  • Forage/silage or hay (high feed value)
  • Catch crop

Green manure:

  • Undersow crop
  • Good penetration of roots into the upper soil layer
  • Root mass 25-30 quintals DM/ha
