Profile
CROSSFIT CR is new to the 2022/23 Recommended List – a variety with outstanding qualities. CROSSFIT CR stands out from other varieties as it is resistant to the common strains of clubroot which are on the increase in the UK.
It is a quad layered variety - meaning it has resistance to clubroot, TuYV Protection, Pod shatter resistance as well as RLM7 stem canker resistance. No other variety in the UK has all of the above stacked traits together making it the ideal variety for a worry free crop in a clubroot situation.
CROSSFIT CR has been in trials in the UK for 6 years. Not only is it recommended for use on clubroot infected land, it has be seen to produce high yields - 99% - and has a very high oil content - 46.4%. CROSSFIT CR is slightly later flowering than some varieties. It has an maturity score of a 6, with a stiff stem scoring an 8 and a 7 for lodging and stem stiffness.
Alongside clubroot resistant varieties it is also important to consider other factors such as the PH. If the soil PH is 7 or above, calcium can be added. Growers should look to lengthening rotations, as well as considering eradicating brassica weeds, such as runch and charlock to help reduce the problem.
CROSSFITCR may, however, be infected by certain strains and infections that have been reported in some fields. Early drilling is also not advised as this can put pressure on the protection. DSV recommends Clubroot tolerant varieties such as Crocodile CR and Crossfit CR should be grown in a 1 in 5 rotation to protect their resistance mechanisms any closer rotation could increase the chances of a breakdown.
