John is growing a range of our new Clearfield varieties in trial this year. They include: Veritas CL, Phoenix CL and our brand new variety DSV 01 which is hopefully going to be on sale in the new year.
John has had long term issues with brassica weeds such as Charlock so has decided to grow Clearfield varieties for the first time. He has three other fields of Phoenix CL as well as the trial field.
The field was drilled on the 25 th of August with a 6m Vaderstad Rapid drill with a rapid lift attachment into a good firm seed bed (clay loam) with adequate moisture. Turkey muck was applied pre-drilling and incorporated with a Vaderstad Topdown. The seed was drilled at 55 seed m 2, aiming for 65% establishment, as scanned by SOYL - Crops grown previously were wheat, beans and oilseed rape. Alongside brassica weeds the field suffers from black grass so vigorous varieties were essential.
The fastest variety in the trial field was the DSV 02 closely followed by Vertias CL and Phoenix CL. The plants were still very small as they had only been drilled relatively recently. Keep an eye on this page to see how John’s trial site progresses throughout the year.
