Robert is growing an extensive list of varieties in trial this year sourced from three different breeders. DSV have supplied their new Turnip Yellow resistant variety Temptation which has been drilled into candidate list trials (recommendation 2018), Sparrow which is looking to be recommended this December and Dariot which has been grown in the UK for the last 3 years and is renowned for its fast vigour and multi-gene phoma resistance characteristics including RLM7.
The trial was drilled 24 th August into some heavy Beccles series clay at 50 seeds per meter2. The field had last grown oilseed rape 5 years ago and its previous crop was winter wheat.
All the varieties were growing well with only a small amount of flea beetle damage. The crop had had chicken muck applied as well as an application of slug pellets it had also been sprayed twice with Hallmark to control flea beetle numbers. The plots showed very little black grass and the volunteer barley didn’t appear to be an issue.
Temptation was the fastest variety out of the eight drilled with two good sized leaves closely followed by Dariot but the Sparrow45 showed similar vigour to DK Exalte and DK Exclaim.
