NIAB challenge cup in 1991) to the current HGCA Recommended List 2011/2012, where
Compass,
Flash,
Dimension and
Hammer are the leading hybrid oilseed
varieties as well as the well known conventional variety Lioness. Ability oilseed rape has also
become th e UK's favourite variety for spring sowing in 2009. DSV UK
Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Saatveredelung AG
(DSV), based in Lippstadt Germany. It employs three full time staff. DSV UK is responsible for
sales and marketing of varieties to the UK seed trade as well as company administration,
advertising and the organisation of the Cereals Event.
DSV Wardington
The Wardington trial site was taken over by DSV UK in July 2008 after the creation of the DSV
UK’s business. Wardington is located between Oxford and Birmingham near Banbury.
Site History
DSV Wardington was established in 2007 when Tim Ball and Graham Urquhart moved toTop Dawkins
Barn (Wardington) with existing grass and wheat breeding work. Their previous site was nearby,
however the land there was heavy. Wardington has easier soil conditions, with sandy loams,
therefore better for trial work.
The
Team
There are five members in the Wardington team John Sweatman is responsible
for managing the station and UK rape seed work (total 10ha). Tim Ball is in charge of the full
grass breeding programme occupying around 7ha of the site. Graham Urquhart is responsible for
early generation wheat breeding on an area amounting to 6ha and. Paul Swain is the technician/
trials assistant. Matthew Kerton was appointed in 2010 as a winter wheat breeder to
further develop the company’s portfolio in the UK market.

Equipment and Facilities
The site has a large storage capacity for essential agricultural machinery such as sprayers,
drills, and tractors required by a busy breeding station. The site has excellent breeding and
testing facilities which include testing fields, a nursery, modern equipment, and
poly-tunnels.
Activities carried out on the site
The team manage 30ha of breeding and trial land. Their work includes running
Recommended List and National List trials in winter oilseed rape.
The main work on the site is to develop varieties to the pre national list stage, and there
is an extensive network of DSV trials throughout relevant regions of the UK in order to gain a
complete picture of variety performance.
